FAIR HOUSING CENTER COMMEMORATES FAIR HOUSING MONTH 2014 WITH SERIES OF FREE EVENTS

On April 1, 2014, the Greater New Orleans Fair Housing Action Center (GNOFHAC) announced a series of events to occur throughout the month in commemoration of National Fair Housing Month. GNOFHAC’s Fair Housing Month events will occur throughout the State, including New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and Shreveport. The events are:

Fair Housing 101 for Small Landlords

This 1.5 hour workshop for small landlords will provide a comprehensive review of a housing provider’s responsibilities under local and federal fair housing laws, including case studies that pertain to small landlords. Topics will include protected classes and transactions under the Fair Housing Act (FHA), protections for people with disabilities, discriminatory harassment, advertising, resident relations and rules, and application and screening procedures. Know Your Rights Training for Tenants

Join us for a workshop on fair housing rights for renters! The workshop is free and open to the public. The training will cover rights and responsibilities under fair housing and landlord-tenant law.

Between a Rock and a Hard Place: Expanding Housing Choice for Domestic Violence Survivors

A 2011 report by the Violence Policy Center ranked Louisiana among the top 10 states in the nation for homicide rates of women murdered by men. One in every four women are likely to experience domestic violence in their lifetimes, and current housing policies fail to address the needs of domestic violence survivors by limiting their access to safe housing. The panel discussion, with national and local practitioners, will explore the current realities of domestic violence in Louisiana, dissect ways in which current state housing policy fails to protect domestic violence survivors and their families, and offer innovative solutions for addressing the complex problems that domestic violence survivors face.

2nd Annual GNOFHAC Crawfish Boil

GNOFHAC staff and board will host it’s 2nd annual crawfish boil and open house. Friends and family, community members and GNOFHAC supporters are invited to visit our S. Jefferson Davis office while engaging in an open discussion of current civil rights and fair housing issues in Louisiana and beyond.
