This morning, thanks to supporters like you, the Louisiana Legislature passed a bill to protect victims of domestic violence from unnecessary evictions. I’m thrilled to report that the bill- the first of its kind in our state- is now on its way to the Governor’s desk to be signed into law!

We’ve been fighting on behalf of victims of domestic violence since 2013, when Marilyn (name changed) called us after being kicked out of her apartment with her young son after the police responded to a domestic violence dispute in her home.

We learned that Marilyn’s story was not unique, and that victims in our state were too often being forced to make an impossible choice: either call the police on their abuser and risk eviction, or jeopardize their safety by not calling 911. With this in mind, I made protecting victims of domestic violence from unnecessary evictions one of my top priorities for 2015.

We at GNOFHAC are beyond grateful to the Louisiana Legislature, and especially to the bill’s tenacious sponsor, Senate President Pro Tempore Sharon Weston Broome, for standing with victims by passing this historic law.

But our work isn’t over. Now, we need your help to ensure that this law is properly enforced to keep victims in their homes.
