Healthy Homes Requires All Rental Units to Include Carbon Monoxide Alarms

Healthy Homes Update – Carbon Monoxide Alarms

New Orleans, LA – All rental properties are now required to have a Carbon Monoxide Alarm, as decided by the New Orleans City Council last month.

The New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) and Health Department (NOHD) will be supplying and installing Combination Carbon Monoxide/Smoke Detectors FREE OF CHARGE to individuals in rental housing.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless and colorless gas often referred to as the “silent killer.” Carbon monoxide is released as a product of combustion, emitted from gas engines, gas and wood stoves, furnaces and heaters. Symptoms of carbon monoxide exposure include headaches, weakness, nausea and shortness of breath.

You can request a Combo CO/Smoke Alarm by calling 504-658-4714 or online at Get Free Smoke Alarms (nola.gov). In the “Additional Comments” section of the online request form, please state that you are requesting a “Combination Alarm.” Residents can request an alarm for every level of their home.
