Celebrate Fair Housing Month with LaFHAC

Join us as we commemorate the signing of the Fair Housing Act this month with a series of events meant to build community, educate, and celebrate housing justice!

Community Crawfish Boil

We’re so excited to announce that LaFHAC is hosting our first Community Crawfish Boil since 2019! We celebrate Fair Housing Month every April to commemorate the passage of the Fair Housing Act – this year marks the 55th anniversary. The boil will be held on Monday, April 17th from 5:30 – 7:30 pm at 1024 Elysian Fields Avenue in New Orleans. The event is free and open to the public and we’ll have beer available by donation. We hope you’ll mark your calendar and plan to join us! Please RSVP to the Facebook event here so we know how many people to expect.

Fair Housing Trivia

We started doing Fair Housing Month trivia as a way to bring our network together virtually during the pandemic. We’re excited to have this event in person this year! Fair Housing Trivia will be held on Friday, April 21st from 5:30 – 7 pm at Twelve Mile Limit at 500 S. Telemachus St. in New Orleans. The event will be outdoors as a COVID safety precaution. Come show off your smarts, meet others in our network, and enjoy food by Third Wheel. Please RSVP to the Facebook event here so we know how many people to expect.

Fair Housing Webinars for Renters & Small Landlords

We’re hosting a free Know Your Housing Rights webinar on April 13th from 5:30 – 6:30 pm. The webinar will cover how to spot housing discrimination, what to do about it, protections for renters and homebuyers, disability protections, who to call for landlord-tenant issues, and more. Register at lafairhousing.salsalabs.org/knowyourrights2023.

We’re also hosting two webinars for small landlords. These free trainings will provide an overview of housing providers’ responsibilities under applicable fair housing laws, including the federal Fair Housing Act and the Louisiana Violence Against Women Act. Topics covered will include:

•    Protected Classes, Covered Dwellings and Covered Transactions
•    Reasonable Modifications and Accommodations for People with Disabilities
•    Advertising and Marketing
•    Ensuring that Your Application and Screening Processes are Non-Discriminatory
•    Developing Fair and Non-Discriminatory Policies for Tenants
•    Preventing Discriminatory Harassment

The presentation will include case studies and best practices tailored to the needs and experiences of small landlords.  Participants will receive certificates of completion.

There are two available dates: Tuesday. April 18th from 6 – 8 pm and Saturday. April 22nd, from 10 am – 12 pm. Register at lafairhousing.salsalabs.org/fairhousingmonth2023slltraining.
