Breaking! Louisiana Fair Housing Action Center loses HUD Grants for Fair Housing Initiative Programs

Late Thursday, February 27th, the Trump Administration abruptly terminated millions of dollars in federal funding to fair housing organizations across the country. These cuts, effective immediately, impact nearly half of all recipients of the Fair Housing Initiative Program (FHIP) grants– including us at LaFHAC.

Most fair housing complaints are not handled by the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Rather, nonprofit organizations like ours do most of the work. Each year we receive thousands of calls from people who have experienced discrimination and we address these injustices through advocacy, litigation, education and training. Since 2020, complaints of discrimination have continued to rise nationally. A world without fair and affordable housing isn’t something we are willing to accept.

Our communities are under attack and we need your help to fight back.

The President cannot cancel more than 50 years of legal precedent because he doesn’t agree. Fair housing is enshrined in law and in the history of our Democracy. It is an unmet mandate of the Civil Rights Movement and it has been a north star for our agency since its founding nearly 30 years ago.

Tell your Senator and Representatives that:

  • You demand continued funding for fair housing organizations through HUD’s Fair Housing Initiative Program.
  • You value fair housing enforcement and education in your community.
  • Fair housing rights are not optional–they are protected by law.

We are committed to using every resource at our disposal to continue the fight. Please consider supporting LaFHAC today to help us secure fair housing for all.

With gratitude for your support and partnership,

Ameca Reali

Executive Director LaFHAC
